New research challenges claims about the MP-constituent link

3 Jun 2026

A new article by Hoover Institution researcher Obaid Akhtar examines one of the central arguments often made in debates about electoral reform: that only single constituencies can preserve a link between MPs and their constituents.

Obaid argues that the relationship between elected representatives and the public is not dependent solely on a system where each area has one representative.

His analysis explores how different electoral systems can maintain accountability and accessibility, whilst also providing fairer representation of voters’ choices.

LDER Chair Keith Sharp has had several positive discussions with Obaid as part of LDER’s continuing work on democratic reform and improving the way representatives are elected.

Overall, the debate highlights an important question for electoral reform: how to create a system that provides both fair representation and a meaningful connection between citizens and those who represent them. Read our view and analysis here.
