The Liberal Democrat vision for our politics:
A truly fair democracy, where everyone’s rights are respected and individuals and communities are empowered.
As Liberal Democrats we believe that:
Everyone should have equal power in our democracy, and be able to hold all Members of Parliament properly to account.
Our goal
Win a proportional voting system for Westminster and all levels of English local authority elections during the 2024-29 parliamentary term.
Our 2026 plan
- Make proportional representation (PR) — fair, equal votes — relevant to voters and central to overcoming the twin challenges of alienation and distrust of politics.
- Maintain close cooperation with party leadership and our MPs to use our parliamentary platform to bring about change.
- Maximise the number of party members and supporters campaigning for reform.
- Play a leading role in galvanising cross-party and non-party collaboration in order to achieve PR.
- Actively support regional/nations steps towards PR.
It’s very very easy. It’s the law that would change our country for the long term. It’s the law that would open up so much — whether it’s health and care, education, transport, social justice, environment. And that law would be to bring in proportional representation.
